National Current Affairs
- Cabinet approves restructuring of National Health Agency as “National Health Authority” for better implementation of Pradhan Mantri – Jan Arogya Yojana.
- Cabinet approves first-ever three way merger in Indian Banking with amalgamation of Vijaya, Dena and Bank of Baroda. The merger which will come into force on April 1, 2019 will form the third largest bank in the country, after government-owned State Bank of India and private sector lender ICICI.
- Cabinet approves creation of the post of Vice Chancellor for National Rail & Transport Institute (Deemed to be University) set up in Vadodara, Gujarat. The NRTI is the country’s first railway university and only third such university in the world after Russia and China.
- On 10th January 2019, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, gave its approval for establishment of three more All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) to boost healthcare infrastructure in the country. Among them, while two will be set up in Jammu & Kashmir’s Samba and Pulwama districts, the third AIIMS will be set up in Rajkot, Gujarat.
- The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to the Constitution (One Hundred and third Amendment) Act, 2019 which grants 10 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions to the economically weaker sections in the general category.
- On January 7, 2019, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved 10% quota in jobs and educational institutions for economically weaker sections in general category. For the implementation of the quota, Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution will have to be amended.
- Union Government issued its nod for setting up the Centre for Classical Language at the Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University in Tirur, Kerala.
- The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved a capacity expansion plan for Numaligarh Refinery (NRL) in Assam from the existing 3 million metric tonne per annum (MMTPA) to 9 MMTPA. Besides the Cabinet has also approved setting up of a crude oil pipeline from Paradip to Numaligarh and a product pipeline from Numaligarh to Siliguri.
- UP government approved construction of world’s longest expressway between Prayagraj and Meerut with the aim of connecting Prayagraj with Western UP.It will have a length of 600 km.
- On January 10, 2019, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced exit of West Bengal from the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna due to the use of PM’s picture in the official poster of the centre-state joint scheme. West Bengal joined the league of states of Telangana, Kerala, Odisha, and Delhi which have opted out of the scheme for varied reasons.
- Sikkim CM launched ‘One Family, One Job’ scheme in Rojgar Mela 2019 to give one state government job to one family.
- Information, Public Relations and Tourism Division of Andaman and Nicobar Administration announced that the Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair will be an authorized Immigration Check post.
- On 5th January 2019, the 27th edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair (NDWBF), which has the UAE‘s third largest emirate Sharjah as its 2019 guest of honour,inaugurated in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
- The Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, has launched an online campaign, ‘#www: Web- WonderWomen’ to recognize the exceptional women who have been driving positive agenda of social change via social media. The partners of the campaign are: Breakthrough and Twitter India.
- Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated India’s longest 300-meter single- lane steel cable suspension bridge over Siang River in Upper Siang district of state bordering China.
- Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched country’s largest startup ecosyst, emmeasuring 1.8 lakh sq ft, integrated startup complex under the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), at the Technology Innovation Zone (TIZ), in Kochi, Kerala.
- Minister of Women and Child Development,Smt Maneka Sanjay Gandhi inaugurated Regional Centre of National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) at Mohali, Punjab.This organisation have already four such Regional Centres one each at Bangalore, Guwahati, Indore and Lucknow besides the Headquarters at New Delhi.
- Minister of State in Department of Space Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated the 1st batch of UNNATI(Unispace Nanosatellite Assembly and Training) programme of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It has been launched by ISRO as part of initiative by United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE-50).
- Prime Minister of India,Shri Narendra Modi launched the Country’s First National Museum of Indian Cinema in Mumbai,Maharashtra, that seeks to portray over a centuryold journey of movies in India. The National Museum of Indian Cinema was build under the guidance by the Museum Advisory Committee headed by noted film maker Shyam Benegal.
- Ministry of Textiles and Government of India launched Artisan Speak at Elephanta Caves(UNESCO heritage site) near mumbai,to strengthen the handlooms and textiles sector of India.
- Civil Aviation minister Suresh Pabhu launched the country’s first Geographical Indication (GI) store at Dabolim International Airport in Goa.
- Three-day 6th ‘Women of India Organic Festival’ by Women and Child Development Ministry held in Chandigarh for the first time to Promote Women Farmers
- Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Pema Khandu declared Pakke Paga Hornbill Festival (PPHF) as the “State Festival” during a valedictory ceremony of the fourth edition of the festival at Seijosa in East Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh.
- Madhya Pradesh Government announced that it is going to create an Adhyatmik Vibhag (spiritual department) by merging several existing department.
- Andhra Pradesh got a separate high court which will temporarily function from the Chief Minister’s camp office in Amravati, the new capital of the state till a permanent building for the High Court is being set up at the ‘Justice City’in Amaravati.
- Kerala women form 620-km long Women’s Wall,that stretched from Kasargod in northern Kerala to the southernmost district of Thiruvananthapuram to uphold gender equality against Sabarimala protests.

- The Oxford Dictionaries announced that the word ‘Nari Shakti’ which is derived from Sanskrit has been chosen as the Hindi Word of the year for 2018. In 2017, Oxford Dictionaries had chosen ‘Aadhar‘ as the word of the year.
- Union Minister of Railways, Piyush Goyal announced that Train 18 which is India’s first indigenously developed engineless semi high speed train has been named as Vande Bharat Express. The Train will run between Delhi and Varanasi at the maximum speed of 160 kmph.
- On December 30, 2018, Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, visited Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He announced renaming of three islands of Andaman and Nicobar and also announced setting up of a deemed university after Netaji Bose.
